Job Purpose

• The Draftsman – Engineering Specialized is responsible for preparing, developing, and maintaining detailed engineering drawings, technical plans, layouts, and design documentation related to municipal infrastructure, roads, transportation networks, utilities, and civil engineering projects. The role supports engineers and project teams by producing accurate technical drawings in accordance with engineering standards, municipal regulations, project specifications, and industry best practices. The position contributes to the successful planning, design, execution, and maintenance of transportation and municipal infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Drafting & Design Support

• Prepare detailed engineering drawings, plans, sections, profiles, and technical illustrations for municipal and transportation projects.

• Develop engineering layouts for roads, highways, bridges, drainage systems, utilities, traffic infrastructure, and related facilities.

• Convert conceptual sketches, engineering calculations, and technical specifications into accurate engineering drawings.

• Assist engineers in the preparation of design packages and technical documentation.

• Ensure all drawings comply with approved design criteria, standards, and project requirements.

CAD & Digital Drawing Management

• Produce and update drawings using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, or other approved drafting software.

• Maintain electronic drawing databases and document control systems.

• Update drawings based on design modifications, site conditions, and project requirements.

• Generate drawing revisions and maintain revision history records.

• Ensure proper file management and archiving of engineering drawings.

Technical Documentation

• Prepare as-built drawings upon project completion.

• Develop detailed shop drawings and construction drawings where required.

• Assist in preparing engineering reports, technical schedules, and quantity-related documentation.

• Maintain accurate records of project drawings and supporting documents.

• Verify consistency between drawings, specifications, and project documentation.

Project Coordination

• Coordinate with engineers, surveyors, planners, architects, and project teams to obtain technical information.

• Attend technical meetings as required to clarify design details and project requirements.

• Support design reviews and ensure technical comments are reflected in revised drawings.

• Coordinate with contractors and consultants regarding drawing submissions and revisions.

Quality Assurance & Compliance

• Review drawings for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with municipal regulations and engineering standards.

• Ensure all drawings conform to applicable codes, construction standards, and drafting procedures.

• Identify discrepancies, errors, and design conflicts and report them to the responsible engineer.

• Support quality audits and technical reviews of engineering documentation.

Site Support

• Conduct site visits when necessary to collect field data and verify existing conditions.

• Assist in confirming dimensions, measurements, and site information for drawing preparation.

• Support project teams in the verification of as-built information.

• Incorporate site findings into engineering drawings and documentation.

Continuous Improvement

• Stay updated on drafting technologies, software developments, and engineering design standards.

• Contribute to improving drafting procedures, templates, and drawing management practices.

• Support the implementation of digital engineering and BIM-related initiatives where applicable.

Qualifications & Experience

Educational Qualifications

• Diploma or Associate Degree in Civil Engineering, Architectural Drafting, Engineering Technology, Drafting Technology, or a related field.

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology or a related discipline is an advantage.

• AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, BIM, or similar technical certifications are preferred.

Experience

• 4-8 years of experience in engineering drafting and design support.

• Experience in municipal infrastructure, transportation, roads, highways, utilities, or civil engineering projects is preferred.

• Experience preparing engineering construction drawings and as-built documentation.

• Familiarity with government or municipality engineering standards is desirable.

Technical Competencies

• Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and engineering drafting software.

• Knowledge of Civil 3D, BIM, MicroStation, Revit, or similar applications.

• Understanding of civil engineering, transportation infrastructure, and utility design principles.
