Job Purpose
The Draftsman is responsible for preparing, updating, and maintaining technical drawings, plans, diagrams, and engineering documentation to support municipal infrastructure, transportation, road, and public works projects. The role assists engineers and technical teams by producing accurate drawings and layouts in accordance with approved specifications, drafting standards, municipal regulations, and project requirements. The Draftsman contributes to the effective planning, design, construction, and maintenance of municipal assets and transportation infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Drafting & Drawing Preparation
Prepare technical drawings, plans, layouts, sections, profiles, and detailed illustrations based on engineering and project requirements.
Convert sketches, concepts, field measurements, and engineering data into accurate technical drawings.
Produce drawings for roads, transportation facilities, utilities, municipal infrastructure, landscaping, and public facilities projects.
Assist in the preparation of design and construction drawings.
Ensure drawing accuracy and completeness prior to submission for review.
Drawing Revision & Maintenance
Update existing drawings to reflect approved design changes and project modifications.
Maintain drawing records, revisions, and version controls.
Revise drawings based on comments and feedback received from engineers and project teams.
Prepare final drawing packages for project implementation and documentation purposes.
Ensure proper filing and archiving of all drawings and related documentation.
CAD Operations
Utilize AutoCAD and other approved drafting software to prepare and edit drawings.
Develop digital drawing files in accordance with organizational drafting standards.
Organize electronic drawing libraries and project documentation.
Ensure compliance with CAD standards, layering conventions, and drawing templates.
Project Support
Support engineers and technical staff in preparing project documentation and design deliverables.
Assist in gathering technical information necessary for drawing preparation.
Coordinate with project teams to obtain updates and clarifications on drawing requirements.
Participate in design review meetings and incorporate approved modifications into drawings.
Site Verification Support
Conduct site visits when required to collect measurements and verify existing site conditions.
Assist in preparing as-built drawings based on project completion data.
Verify dimensions, locations, and technical information for drafting accuracy.
Coordinate with survey and engineering teams regarding field data.
Documentation & Compliance
Ensure drawings comply with approved engineering standards, municipal regulations, and project specifications.
Assist in maintaining engineering records and documentation systems.
Support quality control reviews and technical audits related to project drawings.
Report drawing discrepancies and design coordination issues to supervisors.
Continuous Improvement
Stay updated with drafting software, technologies, and industry best practices.
Support improvements to drafting standards, templates, and workflows.
Participate in training and professional development initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience
Educational Qualifications
Diploma in Drafting, Civil Engineering Technology, Architectural Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
Technical certifications in AutoCAD or drafting software are preferred.
Experience
2-5 years of experience in drafting and technical drawing preparation.
Experience within municipal infrastructure, transportation, roads, public works, utilities, or construction projects is preferred.
Familiarity with engineering drawing standards and construction documentation requirements.
Technical Competencies
Proficiency in AutoCAD and related drafting software.
Basic knowledge of Civil 3D, Revit, BIM, or similar design tools is an advantage.
Understanding of engineering drawings, plans, scales, dimensions, and technical specifications.
Knowledge of drafting standards and document control practices.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
